La Residence Blanc D’Angkor has a close working relationship with Journeys Within Our Community (JWOC). Only 200m in distance from Hotel to Community Center, La Residence Blanc D’Angkor provides guests with the option to experience the fantastic work that JWOC is doing within the community and witness first hand the educational and economic opportunities provided to those who need it the most.
Not only this, La Residence Blanc D’Angkor also provides training and employment opportunities to JWOC’s Scholarship students, giving them the skills and competencies to succeed in the working world.
JWOC’s mission is to reduce poverty levels by increasing educational and economic opportunity for recipients in Cambodia, with a primary focus in Siem Reap. Through their programs, they aspire to empower both those recipients and their supporters to drive positive and ongoing social change in their communities.
The centerpiece of the organization is the Scholarship Program, which covers the full cost of university tuition and textbooks for students who could not otherwise afford to attend. But these students are not only the centerpiece of JWOC, they are also its fundamental engine as they become the volunteer teachers and staff that make the other programs possible. In the process, JWOC is able to not only assist directly with the cost of their education, but also to build on their potential and to develop their working skills, experience, teaching and leadership capabilities more broadly. The expectation is that many of them will become future local and national leaders and the idea of giving back will be something they embrace. The education they get is not just at school, through volunteering at JWOC they see the power they have to make positive change in their own communities. This is reflected in JWOC’s motto, “Learning Today, Leading Tomorrow.”
JWOC’s other core programs are also education-focused, consisting of Free Classes for children, youth and adults at JWOC’s Siem Reap Community Center. This program provides over 800 students the opportunity to learn English, IT, Science and Art classes (to those who would not otherwise be able to afford or access it). In addition, the volunteer force of Scholarship Students allows JWOC to meet other high-priority needs in Siem Reap and the surrounding villages through its Community Support program which includes Hygiene, Nutrition, Maternal Health, Positive Parenting, Financial Literacy training as well as linking beneficiaries with institutions and other NGO services. Finally, JWOC provides microloans to facilitate students university fees and other vocational training opportunities.
As their name conveys, JWOC was born from within the community, founded in 2005 by the owners of the Journeys Within Tour Company and Boutique Hotel based in Siem Reap. While their tour and hotel guests were struck by the beauty of Cambodia and warmth of its people, they were equally struck by the vastness of the need they saw around them and asked how they could help. Because the founders lived in the community, their neighbors also sought them out for support. With a focus on providing opportunities, not handouts, JWOC continues to work in concert with the community to identify and prioritize needs and to act together to address them.
